Joseph Gordon-Levitt aspires to be as good a director as Christopher Nolan.

'The Dark Knight Rises' actor is currently filming his directorial debut 'Don Jon's Addiction' with Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore, and hopes to channel mentor Christopher's free indie spirit and ''individual voice'' in his own work.

He said: ''I've been a fan of his since 'Mememto', which was a Sundance [indie] movie. He brings that same independence to these huge movies.

'''The Dark Knight Rises' hasn't been made by a corporate committee. Nobody at Warner Bros. is telling Chris what to do.

''That's the indie thing... It's got an individual voice, of an artist who's got something to say, a storyteller who really wants to tell you a real story and not just bedazzle you.''

The 31-year-old actor shot to international fame in indie flick '(500) Days Of Summer' alongside Zooey Deschanel and caught the eye of Christopher, who cast him in 'Inception' and the upcoming 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

Although Joseph enjoys acting, his real love is filmmaking and he is enjoying finally being in the director's chair.

He added to The Times newspaper: ''To be honest, I always wanted to [direct] a movie; it's something I've been working towards for a long time.

''I love being an actor, but I also have stories I want to tell, and I'm not going to wait for somebody to hire me to do it.''
