Tom Hanks has made the decision not to play 'pussies' in any future films.

The 'Cast Away' actor - who is currently starring in 'Larry Crowne', a movie about a man in his 50s who decides to go back to college - no longer wants to take on roles starring "unlucky" characters and instead wants to play grittier parts.

He said: "I think I was 37 by then and I realised I'm not a young man any more, so I said, 'I don't think I want to play pussies any longer.' And I mean that not in a pejorative sense: I mean it in the sense that I didn't want to play those guys who are like, 'Oh poor me, I'm so unlucky.'

"I wanted to play men who were experiencing bitter compromise."

Now, the two-time Oscar-winner has learnt the power of decision making, and is happy to say "no" to projects he does not want to undertake.

He added to The Scotsman newspaper: "There was a point when I realised you could actually say no. "There's a period of time where you just can't believe they are asking you to do something and you think your job is to say yes. Learning to say no is hard to do because the money's good, but if you don't really have a thrust on what the part is that's when it gets to be a problem."
