Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

"Star Trek Into Darkness" had a strong opening. Between the profits earned from its Wednesday opening and weekend profits of $70,555,000, the sci-fi epic has earned over $84 million. When the Enterprise returns to Earth, the crew discovers that their home planet is in grave danger. As stubborn and as brave as ever, Captain Kirk decides to embark on a risky mission to track down a weapon that could spell certain disaster. The film has a PG-13 rating for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action.

"Iron Man 3" earned $35,182,000 over the weekend, bringing overall profits to more than $337 million. Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man, has been second-guessing himself lately. As if sensing the superhero's weakness, a relentless terrorist turns Iron Man into his personal target. As Stark fights back, he realizes that he is risking everything to find his strength again. "Iron Man 3" has a PG-13 rating for brief suggestive content and intense sci-fi action and violence.

"The Great Gatsby" brought in $23,415,000 during the weekend. Since its opening, the film has earned over $90 million. Jay Gatsby is one of the wealthiest and most influential men in New York, but behind the scenes, his personal life is in disarray. He is in love with the enigmatic and beautiful Daisy, who is married to a philandering man. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to smoking, partying, brief strong language, mature content, and violent images.

"Pain & Gain" saw weekend profits of $3,100,000. Overall, "Pain & Gain" has brought in over $46 million. When Daniel Lugo concocts an unsavory scheme, he convinces his gym rat friends to join him. Before very long, their plot ends up in mayhem and bloodshed. Now, Lugo and his cronies have to figure out how to escape the law. The film has an R rating for nudity, crude mature content, language, drug use, and bloody violence.

Months after its debut in theaters, "The Croods" is still drawing audiences. In addition to earning more than $176 million overall, the animated family film brought in $2,600,000 this weekend. The Croods live a sheltered life inside their cave, too anxious to explore the outside world. Fate has other plans for the cave dwellers. After a natural disaster forces them to seek new shelter, the Croods learn how amazing the world can be. "The Croods" has a PG rating for scary action sequences.

"42" landed in sixth place in overall rankings, with weekend earnings that hit $2,730,000. Jackie Robinson dreams of becoming a baseball star, but the racial tensions of the 1940s prove to be an obstacle. With the encouragement of a team executive who sees promise in Robinson, the athlete decides to risk everything and go for his dream. The film's profits now reach more than $88 million. "42" has a PG-13 rating for thematic elements that include language.

"Side Effects" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, May 21. After struggling with depression, Emily finally seeks help from a professional. When she starts taking a new drug to boost her moods, strange things start taking place. Before she realizes what is happening, Emily is in the middle of a tangle of lies and deceit. The eerie thriller has an R rating for violence, language, nudity, and mature content.

"Parker" follows a thief who lives by his own strict code of ethics. His colleagues are not as honest, and they soon double-cross Parker and leave him for dead. Parker plans his revenge, determined to make his colleagues regret their ways. Jason Statham stars in the film, which has an R rating for violence, language, nudity, and mature content.

"Beautiful Creatures" tells the story of an unconventional high school romance. When Lena moves to town, she catches Ethan's eye right away. As the two grow close, Lena reveals to Ethan that she is no ordinary teenage girl. Her special powers could be her downfall. "Beautiful Creatures" has a PG-13 rating for violence, scary images, and some mature material.

"Stand Up Guys" stars Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, and Alan Arkin. After accepting a job that involves killing his friend, an aging gangster decides to live things up and have a little bit of fun. His friends join in the night of mayhem, debauchery, and revelations. "Stand Up Guys" has an R rating for drug use, violence, language, and mature content.

"The Last Stand" features Arnold Schwarzenegger as a sheriff with a dark past. Now, he tries his best to protect his small and quiet town. When an escaped convict makes a beeline for the sheriff's town, he draws on all his resources to redeem himself and catch the criminal in his tracks. "The Last Stand" is rated R for language and strong bloody violence.
