Happy Valentine's Day! New Releases for You and Your Valentine

Taking a date to watch a film on Valentine's Day is one of the most popular activities for new couples to do. Love is in the air and watching a film together offers a nice, relaxing way to get to know one another without getting into anything serious too quickly. Valentine's Day this year has an excellent selection of new films that are to be released, ranging from a computer-animated family film to a typical romantic film and a supernatural romance film to an action film that offers the fifth installment in an extremely popular film series.

"Escape from Planet Earth"

Produced by Rainmaker Entertainment, "Escape from Planet Earth" is not a typical Valentine's Day film, in that the primary target audience is kids. However, this film also gives a reason for parents to take their kids out on a day that is associated with love. Themes of love can be found throughout the film, but the reality is that this movie is meant for a little light-hearted fun. Adults may recognize some of the voices used for the animated characters, such as Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ricky Gervais, and Sofia Vergara. The plot occurs on an imaginary planet, Baab, where a blue population resides. Scorch, the local hero and astronaut voiced over by the acclaimed Canadian-American actor Brendan Fraser, finds himself in a dilemma when an SOS call is received from a nearby planet. It turns out that the call is a hoax, and Scorch is caught in a cunning trap. It is left up to Scorch's younger brother, Shanker (played by William Shatner), to save his brother and Baab from being annihilated.

"Safe Haven"

Valentine's Day would not be the same without a classic American love story, and "Safe Haven" provides just that. Adapted from Nicholas Sparks' novel of the same name, "Safe Haven" was originally scheduled to be released on Feb. 8, but the release date was pushed back a few days so that the film can take advantage of a Valentine's Day release. The plot of the film revolves around the female lead, Katie, played by Julianne Hough, who relocates to a small country town in North Carolina. Katie has been constantly running from her past, and this fear inhibits her from making new friends in Southport. Eventually Katie opens up to the townspeople and begins to fall in love with Alex (played by Josh Duhamel). Although Katie starts to grow affection towards Southport and Alex, her past forces her to make a choice between safety and uncertainty.

"Beautiful Creatures"

"Beautiful Creatures" is not a classic romance film because it has some supernatural elements to it. Like "Safe Haven," this film is also based a novel of the same title (written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl). Alcon Entertainment purchased the rights to a film of the book version in 2009. Director Richard LaGravenese was signed not long after this, while casting took place over the latter half of 2011 and early 2012. Jack O'Connell, the initial actor signed to play the lead role of Ethan Lawson Wate, had to abandon the film due to a scheduling conflict, so Alden Ehrenreich was hired to take over. Filming commenced in New Orleans in April 2012 and concluded in July of the same year. The plot of the film is focused on Lena Duchannes, played by Alice Englert, who winds up in a small town only to find Ethan. He quickly convinces Lena to leave town but realizes that she has supernatural powers. For Lena's sixteenth birthday, she must go through a process to determine if she will remain in the light and stay with Ethan or be case into the dark forever.

"A Good Day to Die Hard"

Valentine's Day does not seem the right time to release an action film, but perhaps this is the most anticipated film of the year so far. Bruce Willis reprises the role of John McClane in "A Good Day to Die Hard," the fifth installment of the Die Hard series. After "Live Free or Die Hard" was released in 2007, Willis was keen for another role as McClane. Unlike the previous four films, "A Good Day to Die Hard" goes international, with filming done in Hungary and the plot revolving around Russia. McClane's son gets into some trouble with the police in Moscow, so McClane has to go rescue him. Once he gets there, McClane finds that his son is just a small piece of a major global terrorist plot. The film was released on Feb. 7 in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Malaysia, but the first time that American audiences will be able to view it is Feb. 14.
