Quick Hits Movie Review: “Man of Steel”

Movie Description(Click Here To Hide)

A 2013 reboot of the classic superhero film series, Man of Steel will star British heartthrob Henry Cavill as Clark Kent while Amy Adams portrays Lois Lane. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are also on board to star as Clark's parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively.

2.5

The latest superhero mega-blockbuster to hit the screens is the Zack Snyder (“300,” “Watchman”) directed film “Man of Steel”. In this film Superman (Henry Cavill) is learning about who he is along with the power and responsibility that comes with it. His mother Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer) and his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) must get their son off the dying planet of Krypton before their race is extinguished. Also escaping the disaster is the very barbaric, yet loyal, servant of Krypton, General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his crew.  Clark Kent, with the help of his news reporter friend Lois Lane (Amy Adams), must help save the earth from the dangers of Zod.

You may be wondering why I gave this film 2 1/2 stars because it is a good film. Normally, I probably would have given this film 3 1/2 stars, but I felt the context of the movie went a little farther than where a Superman movie should go. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy the film, but I believe these types of movies are more for the kids, and this definitely is not a kids movie. I like the work writer Christopher Nolan did with the Batman series, but do they all have to be so dark?  What happened to the great Lex Luther played so well by Gene Hackman? Or the original Joker played by Jack Nicholson? Is there no room for comic relief in these films?

The violence in this film goes way beyond any other Superman film. I am used to Superman saving people, which he does in this film, but people also seemed to die left and right. The qualities of what makes Superman seemed to be ignored in the film as thousands of people died, and every building in sight seemed to be blown up with special effects and insane explosions.

Again, I thought this was a good film and the acting was fantastic. I just feel it was over the top for what a superhero film should be. I wish they would just chill out on all the crazy special effects and constant violence with films like this.
