Quick Hits Movie Review: “What Richard Did”

“What Richard Did” is the newest film from director Lenny Abrahamson. Abrahamson, who in 2007 won the C.I.C.A.E. Award for “Garage” at the Cannes Film Festival, once again has found himself winning at the Irish Film and Television Awards as Best Director for “What Richard Did”. Needless to say, he is a very good director and his latest film reflects that.
When watching and rating a movie like this, yu have to take a lot into consideration. The film definitely had a small budget, so don’t expect crazy special effects or anything like that. These kind of films have to rely on the story, the actors, the director, and the overall atmosphere of the film.
The story is very emotional and well thought out. This young Irish man named Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor) falls in love with a young Irish woman named Lara Hogan (Roisin Murphy), but the problem is Lara already has a boyfriend, Conor (Sam Keeley). Richard eventually wins over Lara, but during a confrontation with Conor at a party, Richard ends up killing Conor in a fight and has to deal with the consequences.
The acting in this film was good, not great. The main characters I felt were genuinely good at their roles, but the supporting actors didn’t really hold up as well. The movie takes place in Ireland and all the actors obviously spoke with the proper accent, but the only problem for me is sometimes I found them hard to understand.
I think this is a good film that definitely deserves some attention. The film starts very slow and ends as soon as it seems to pick up. Give the film a chance though and you won’t be disappointed.
“What Richard Did” is currently available on VOD.
