Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are interviewed about their new film "Kon-Tiki"
On September 5th, 2013, directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (“Max Manus: Man of War” / “Bandidas”) were interviewed by Nick Leyland of Movie Room Reviews (MRR) about their new film, "Kon-Tiki". The full interview with the directors can be found on MovieRoomReviews.com.
Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg have quickly found Hollywood success, after directing only 2 prior films, “Max Manus: Man of War” & “Bandidas”, receiving an Oscar nomination for “Kon-Tiki”, and most recently being hired to direct “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”, the fifth installment of the series.
The Norwegian version of “Kon-Tiki” was the version nominated for an Oscar, as the film was impressively filmed in 2 languages, English and Norwegian, as opposed to being subtitled or over-dubbed.
“Kon-Tiki” is the story of Legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal and his journey across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft in 1947, for which an Oscar winning documentary was made in 1951.
Thor Heyerdal and 5 other men set out on an 8,000 kilometer trip, lasting 101 days, to prove that ancient South Americans could have populated the Polynesian islands.
In their interview with MRR, Ronning and Sandberg share the trials of making this film. As the most expensive Scandinavian film ever made, the $15M budget had to be gathered from 24 financing sources in 8 countries.
“The story of Thor Heyerdahl and Kon-Tiki is the story that we grew up with actually, and it was just one of those stories that always appealed to us. This sense of real adventure. And so basically what happened was that five years ago now, almost six years ago, we started working on this project.” -Joachim Ronning
"Kon-Tiki" was produced by Recorded Picture Company and distributed by The Weinstein Company. “Kon-Tiki” has won or been nominated for many awards around the world, including nominations for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and the 2013 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
