Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

"Pain & Gain" led at the box office during the weekend of April 26, earning $20 million. Daniel Lugo is dissatisfied with his mediocre job at a gym. He starts wondering if he and his friends can put their muscles to good use, especially since he knows a recently released convict who is willing to dive right back into trouble. What follows is a daring and illegal ploy that goes terribly wrong in ways Lugo did not even anticipate. Michael Bay's action film has an R rating for bloody violence, nudity, crude content, language, and drug use.

"The Big Wedding" saw profits of $7,500,000 during its first weekend in theaters. Alejandro has met the love of his life and is tying the knot. The problem is that his adoptive parents have untied the knot. Since Alejandro's biological mother is traveling all the way from Colombia to attend his wedding, he wants everything to seem picture perfect. When Alejandro pleads with his adoptive parents to pretend to be happily married, they reluctantly agree, but trouble ensues. Brief nudity, language, and mature content contribute to an R rating.

"Oblivion" earned $17,443,000, raising overall box office profits to more than $64 million. After hostile aliens have turned the Earth into an inhospitable wasteland, a small crew of human beings remains behind to mine the planet's last few resources. One of these workers, Jack Harper, encounters a number of strange individuals. Before long, he starts to doubt everything he knows. Jack has to figure out where his alliances lie before he departs the planet. The film's PG-13 rating is due to sensuality, nudity, sci-fi action violence, and brief strong language.

"42" made $10,725,000, with total earnings now equaling over $69 million. From an early age, Jackie Robinson's potential to become a baseball great has been obvious. All the same, he worries that his race will hold him back from joining the major leagues. Working with the team executive of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson defiantly stakes his claim in baseball history, creating both controversy and true inspiration. "42" has a PG-13 rating for thematic elements that include language.

"The Croods" continued to draw crowds to the theaters. Box office profits of $6,600,000 over the weekend helped the movie top the $163 million mark. When Guy first meets Eep, she longs for the same kind of adventurous life that he leads. Unfortunately for Eep, her neurotic dad keeps close tabs on the family. Soon, though, an unexpected incident sends Eep and her family searching for a new home, with Guy as their friendly guide. The Croods will have to learn important lessons about trust, discovery, and taking risks. "The Croods" is rated PG for scary action sequences.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" brought in $3,620,000. Cobra has redoubled their efforts to take control of the United States government, leaving devastation and confusion in their wake. The worst casualty is the G.I. Joe team, wrongfully framed for a terrible crime they did not commit. With most of the G.I. Joe team members out of commission, the remaining soldiers have to find a way to defeat Cobra Commander and restore some measure of peace to the country, before it's too late. The film has a PG-13 rating for language, brief sensuality, combat violence, and martial arts action.

Movies to DVD

"The Silver Linings Playbook" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, April 30. The movie features an Oscar-winning performance by Jennifer Lawrence. After Pat returns from a mental institution, he only has one goal. He wants to reconnect with his wife and prove that he is a better man. After Pat meets Tiffany, the sister of his wife's best friend, he hopes to user her to contact his spouse. However, Tiffany has some plans of her own. The R rating is due to some nudity and mature content, as well as language.

"The Guilt Trip" stars Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand as a mother and son who end up on an unexpected road trip together. Andy hopes to sell his invention and finally become rich and successful. His mom, Joyce, longs to meet a nice man, maybe even reconnect with her first true. As Andy and Joyce clash and disagree, they begin to realize how much they have in common. "The Guilt Trip" has a PG-13 rating for risquŽ material and language.

In "Broken City," an ex-police officer struggles to redeem himself. He reluctantly agrees to work for a powerful mayor, hoping to once again rise to the top of the city's food chain. Unfortunately, however, the mayor is not what he seems, and by the time the ex-cop realizes this, it may be too late to turn back. The film's R rating is due to pervasive language, violence, and mature content.
