"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" Shines the Spotlight on Parenting

-- Kids and adults are already buzzing about the upcoming fantasy drama "The Odd Life of Timothy Green." Directed by Peter Hedges, the film is scheduled to be released on August 15, 2012 by Walt Disney Pictures.

In the movie, Jim and Cindy Green is a happily married couple making their home in Stanleyville. Excited about starting a family, the couple is devastated when they learn they will not be able to conceive and have a child of their own as they had hoped. Still reeling from the news, the couple opens a bottle of red wine on a dark stormy night and decides to make a list containing all of their wishes for the child they would like to have had. All of their hopes and dreams for their would-be child go into the list, including his characteristics and even special achievements and life events, such as "scoring the winning goal," "honest to a fault," and "Picasso with a pencil." They then put the list in a box and bury it in the backyard. When they awaken the next morning, there is a 10-year old child, Timothy, on their doorstep claiming he is their child. The Greens quickly realize that while Timothy's appearance is certainly special, some of the greatest joys in life can come from the unexpected.

Jennifer Garner, who portrays the role of Cindy Green, recently gave audiences a sneak peak at the film. Garner stated that she fell for the story and the "magical element in the film." Garner, who is the parent of three children with husband Ben Affleck, further stated that as a mother, she enjoyed the message the film delivers: the value of what is different about every child. Garner, who is a Golden Globe and SAG award-winning actress, first gained notice when she was cast in the role of Sydney Bristow on the television series "Alias." Since then, she has gone on to appear in a number of film roles, including "13 Going on 30" and "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past."

Joel Edgerton joins Garner in the cast, filling the role of her onscreen husband, Jim Green. The Australian actor is most well-known for his roles in the Star Wars films, including "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." Edgerton has also appeared in "Warrior," "The Thing" and "Animal Kingdom." Edgerton will also soon appear as Tom Buchanan in "The Great Gatsby."

Cameron "CJ" Adams stars as Timothy Green. Prior to landing the role of Timothy Green, CJ Adams previously played the role of Elliot in the 2007 movie "Dan in Real Life." Peter Hedges also directed Adams in "Dan in Real Life."

Other cast members include Ron Livingston, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dianne Wiest, Michael Arden, Lois Smith, Rhoda Griffis, Sharon Morris, and Odeya Rush.

Viewers were first given a look at the film when the trailer premiered for the first time during the movie "Brave." Along with several other films, "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" was previewed at the Disney Expo.

The film came about after Peter Hedges was signed to write and direct the film in June of 2009. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" is one of the first movies to be produced after a deal was made between Disney and Scott Sanders Productions in 2007.

Director Peter Hedges has stated that when Timothy arrives, he displays the same qualities his parents originally hoped for when they composed their baby wish list. They quickly learn, however, that those qualities appear in ways they never could possibly have dreamed of.

So, where exactly does Timothy come from? Currently, Disney is keeping mum about Timothy's origin. Although Timothy is 10 years old when he arrives on his parents' doorstep, Garner has stated that Timothy does not have any prior emotional memories and is completely naïve. In other words, there is a reason he is completely honest just as his parents had once hoped.

Although Garner and her husband Affleck have had some time to adjust the concept of parenting their two daughters and son, this is not the case with her onscreen character. Cindy and Jim Green must quickly adapt to the idea of parenting while also recognizing how quickly time passes in the process.

The idea of the story came about from director and writer Peter Hedges' experiences with his own two teenage sons. He then adapted the story with Ahmet Zappa, producer, to appear on the screen. Hedges has stated that he desired to create a film that showed what it is like to be a parent in today's world.
