Drew Pearce to script "Mission: Impossible 5"

The fourth film in the Mission: Impossible film series, "Ghost Protocol" stars Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner & Simon Pegg. When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the U.S. government initiates a black ops "ghost protocol" and disavows the entire Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team are to be blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate in the dark, outside of their agency. However, Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured during their mission, they will be charged as terrorists planning to incite global nuclear war. Ethan is then forced to work with ex-IMF agent Brandt (Renner), who knows more about Hunt and his past than even Hunt himself.

'Iron Man 3' co-writer Drew Pearce will pen 'Mission: Impossible 5'.

The scriptwriter has been given the task of writing Paramount's next installment in the action franchise, which Tom Cruise will star in as well as produce.

Christopher McQuarrie - who directed Cruise in 2012's 'Jack Reacher' - has entered negotiations to direct, while J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot company will produce the movie, whose plot is being kept secret.

The 'Mission: Impossible' franchise - which first hit screens in 1996 and stars Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt - is as popular as ever and has grossed more than $2 billion overall.

The fourth film in the series, 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol', earned $700 million worldwide and became action veteran Cruise's highest-earning film ever.

The Brad Bird-helmed flick saw 'Avengers' star Jeremy Renner join the franchise while Simon Pegg reprised his role as technician Benji Dunn.

Production is expected to begin on 'MI:5' this autumn after Cruise finishes filming Warner Bros.' 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.', a big screen adaptation of the cult 1960s TV show,

Scriptwriter Pearce is also working on Guillermo del Toro's much-anticipated 'Pacific Rim', as well as planning his directorial debut.
