Michelle Pfeiffer is in talks to star alongside Robert De Niro in 'Malavita'.

The actress is in negotiations to play a tough mother figure with a penchant for arson in the Luc Besson directed film, based on Tonino Benacquista's book 'Badfellas'.

The story follows a mafia family who relocate to France under the witness protection program. The family do their best to fit in, but find it hard to hide their past and before long slip back into their old ways.

Luc has adapted the script and will also produce the movie, which starts production in August.

Michelle has previously starred alongside Robert in two films, 2007's 'Stardust' and 'New Year's Eve', released last year.

The actress has also recently appeared in 'Dark Shadows' which saw her reunited with director Tim Burton, who she last worked with in 1992, playing Catwoman in 'Batman Returns', one of her most iconic roles.

Michelle, 54, said after becoming interested in the film she phoned up the director to ask him if she could be a part of it, something she never usually does.

She said: ''I can count maybe two or three times in my life when I've called a director. I was really uncomfortable doing it, and I don't think I would have done it had I not known it was him.

''He was very lovely, he was the same Tim. I always feel very comfortable with him, as we have very similar backgrounds, we grew up in similar neighbourhoods and obviously watched the same TV shows.''
