Weekend Recap: "Man of Steel" is at the Top of the Box Office

"Man of Steel" had an opening weekend of superhero proportions. The earnings of $113,080,000, plus the $12 million from the film's Thursday opening, have resulted in profits of $125,080,000. The movie explores an iconic superhero as he undertakes a quest for personal discovery. Although Clark Kent knows he is different, he does not comprehend just how different he is until one of his fellow Kryptonians comes to Earth with a vengeful plan. The movie has a PG-13 rating for language and intense sequences of sci-fi action, destruction, and violence.

"This Is the End" earned $20,500,000, landing in second place in overall box office rankings. Since its Wednesday opening, the film has earned $32,808,135. When Seth Rogen and his friend Jay Baruchel head to James Franco's home for a lavish party, they expect to get into all kinds of trouble. As it turns out, fate has more in store for them than they ever expected. The movie has an R rating for crude, mature content, pervasive language, drug use, language, and brief graphic nudity.

Continuing Films

"Now You See Me" earned $10,320,000, bringing total earnings to over $80 million. As an FBI agent, Dylan has seen plenty of strange things in his time. But nothing quite rivals what he faces when he investigates a group of Las Vegas magicians who are carrying off astonishing heists. Dylan will have to turn to strange sources to uncover their secrets. Language, action, and mature content contribute to a PG-13 rating.

"Fast & Furious 6" has brought in more than $219 million. This includes the $9,433,000 earned during the weekend of June 14. Hobbs approaches Dom with an offer that the criminal cannot turn down. With Dom's help, Hobbs hopes to locate a former British Special Services soldier who has gone dangerously rogue. Dom puts everything on the line, but the pay-off could be worth it. "Fast & Furious 6" has a PG-13 rating for mature content, language, and intense sequences of action, violence, and mayhem.

"The Purge" saw earnings of $8,200,000, with overall box office profits of more than $51 million. When a stranger seeks refuge in his home, James Sandin is not sure whether to protect the newcomer or look out for his wife and children. The decision is all the more difficult since no law enforcement services are available to help. The suspenseful horror movie has an R rating for disturbing violence and language.

"The Internship" earned $7 million. Since its opening, the movie has brought in $30,951,361. Realizing that they need to get competitive if they want to survive in the information age, Billy and Nick join the cutthroat Google internship program. Their fellow interns may seem geeky, but the young geniuses will do anything it takes to get ahead. Due to partying, language, crude humor, and mature content, the film has a PG-13 rating.

Movies to DVD

"Jack the Giant Slayer" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, June 18. A poor and humble young man dreams of leading an exciting life, especially after he meets the beautiful princess. But when it becomes clear that he will play an important part in a fight between humans and giants, Jack's fate changes drastically. The PG-13 rating is for frightening images, brief language, and intense sequences of fantasy action violence.

In "21 and Over," Jeff is a hardworking student with parents who only want the best. Unfortunately, Jeff's twenty-first birthday and a med school interview collide. Jeff's friends make sure he will never forget the fateful night, especially since it may cost him his future. The raunchy comedy features an R rating for pervasive language, crude mature content, graphic nudity, drugs, and drinking.

"The Last Exorcism Part II" stars Ashley Bell as Nell, a young woman who has survived unthinkable horrors. Now, she has to find a way to create a normal life for herself. An evil presence still stalks Nell, waiting for the right moment to strike and reawaken the terror. Horror violence, terror, and brief language contribute to a PG-13 rating.

"Stoker" tells an eerie story of violence and family secrets. After the death of her father, India tries to get along with her domineering mother and her enigmatic uncle. Before long, the young woman has been seduced by a dark side she never even knew she had. From the director of "Oldboy" (2003), the movie has an R rating for disturbing violence and mature content.

"Quartet" takes place in a home for retired musicians. Although the residents may be elderly, they still have just as much passion when it comes to their art and their rivalries. The arrival of a musician with ties to the past stirs up drama. The charming comedy has a PG-13 rating for suggestive content and brief strong language.
