"Lincoln": Another Outstanding Steven Spielberg Movie?

-- Fans of Steven Spielberg are gearing up for another spectacular movie with the release of "Lincoln." The biographical drama, reportedly set to premier at the New York Film Festival, is slotted for wide release in the United States on Nov. 16, 2012. Even discounting the fact that Spielberg is a talented and seasoned director, the movie's story alone is enough to captivate audiences.

"Lincoln" is the story about Abraham Lincoln's struggle with wartime carnage during the American Civil War. It depicts the president's decision to free the slaves as well as the opposition he had to contend with from his cabinet members. The makers of the movie have said that the main focus of the film is not the war itself but the collision of the president and his cabinet members on the issue of abolition. This means the movie is certainly set to focus on the last few months of Lincoln's life as well as the victory of the Union.

History buffs will be delighted to know that the extremely close vote in the House of Representatives on the Thirteenth Amendment will be given special attention in this film. Only time will tell, however, how much the movie depicts historical facts or whether it will just be a glorified work of art. Those who know Spielberg well can be confident that the film will not deviate too much from the facts.

This biographical drama is produced by DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Participant Media, Parkes/MacDonald Productions, Amblin Entertainment, Office Seekers Productions, and Imagine Entertainment. President Abraham Lincoln is played by Daniel Day-Lewis and Mary Todd Lincoln by Sally Field. Day-Lewis, an award winning actor, is known for his roles in "My Left Foot" (1989) and "There Will Be Blood" (2007), among other films. Many movie fans are eagerly waiting to see if he can use his famed onscreen presence to bring Abraham Lincoln to life on the big screen. This actor is known to be very selective, and the fact that he agreed to take this role should be enough to assuage any doubts about his suitability for the part.

Sally Field, a talented actress, producer, singer, and screenwriter has played many different roles in her long career. Some of the movies she has featured in include "Norma Rae" (1979), "Places in the Heart" (1984), and "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993). Other cast members include Tommy Lee Jones (Thaddeus Stevens), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Robert Todd Lincoln), and Jared Harris (Ulysses S. Grant), just to mention a few. The film is based on the biography Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin, although the director conceded that the biography was too wide to be made into a film so only a small portion of it is used in the movie.

The movie's director, Spielberg, is a household name in today's world. Spielberg is not only a movie director but is also a screenwriter, video game designer, producer, and studio entrepreneur. He has been in the industry for over four decades. In his early days, he mainly dealt with science fiction and adventure movies. It was only in his later works that he began to dwell on issue-based films; and some of the issues he dealt with included terrorism, the slave trade, and the Holocaust. His list of outstanding works is long and includes such great movies as "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), "Schindler's List" (1993), and "Jurassic Park" (1993). If he even brings a fraction of the genius he showed in these and other films, then "Lincoln" will surely prove to be a memorable film.

Just after the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, movie fans were treated to a glimpse of "Lincoln" via the movie's new trailer. Given that this drama is a political flick, the timing of the trailer has surely increased the eagerness many people have for the movie. This two-minute trailer begins by showing a series of images of prominent people and memorable moments in history such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and the flag-raising ceremony at Iwo Jima. As the images are shown, the high-pitched voice of President Lincoln (Day-Lewis) is heard in the background. These images are followed by different scenes from the movie, all of which help in stirring up appetite for the main film. For many people, it is true to say that November 16 cannot come fast enough.
