Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess spent a lot of time in the pub while shooting 'One Day'.

The pair star as lead characters Emma and Dexter in the adaptation of David Nicholls' romantic drama novel, and while recording in the UK the pair enjoyed getting to know each other by watching the soccer World Cup - which was happening at the time - and going on pub crawls.

Jim said: "I got to know Anne very well, yeah. We just sort of hung out. When you are making a film you spend so much time together. Our friendship developed over the course of the film.

"We shot so out of sequence so we were all over the place! We just hung out and listened to music. We went to a few pubs, yeah. The World Cup was on when we were shooting the film so we got heavily into that!"

Anne's character Emma is a Yorkshire-born girl, and while the Oscar-nominated actress has come under some criticism for her accent, Jim thinks that is a "shame" because those in front of the camera always play lots of different people.

He added on ITV1's 'This Morning': "It seems like she's in the firing line for her accent, but she's an actress and as an actor or an actress you play lots of different people in lots of walks of life. It seems a shame people are giving her a hard time."
