A biopic about 'Lord of the Rings' author J.R.R. Tolkien is in the works.

The legendary writer, who wrote the popular fantasy novel as well as prequel novel 'The Hobbit', will be the subject of a historical drama documenting his life and the events that led to him writing the best-selling stories.

The film is being produced by Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment, who have tapped Irish screenwriter David Gleeson to pen the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tolkien's life certainly proves cinematic as the writer fought in World War I, between 1914 and 1918, and was a codebreaker-in-waiting during World War II, between 1939 and 1945.

The scribe was also close pals with 'The Chronicles of Narnia' creator C.S. Lewis, with whom he formed a writing group known as the Inklings.

Tolkien penned 'The Hobbit' in 1937 and followed up nearly 20 years later with 'Lord of the Rings'.

The books have gone on to sell millions of copies around the world, capturing the imaginations of children and adults alike, and they have since been adapted into blockbuster movies directed by Peter Jackson.

The filmmaker's acclaimed 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy was released between 2001 and 2003, with the final instalment, 'The Return of the King', earning a Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Jackson has since adapted 'The Hobbit' into a movie trilogy, which launched in 2012.
