The plot picks up just as the Dwarfs, Bilbo and Gandalf have successfully crossed over the misty mountains. Bilbo has in his possession the one ring, but now the group must continue their journey to get their gold back from the Dragon.

Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" ruled the box office during the weekend of December 13, bringing in $73,675,000. As the dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo continue voyaging towards the Lonely Mountain, they encounter yet more dangers along their path, from giant spiders to Orcs. The most intimidating enemy, the ruthless dragon Smaug, looms ever closer. The film has a PG-13 rating for extended sequences of intense fantasy action and violence, plus frightening images.

"Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" saw opening weekend profits of $16 million. Madea's niece, Eileen, worries about her daughter, who won't be coming home for the holiday season. When Eileen and Madea travel to a rural area to bring Christmas cheer, they learn the secrets Lacey's trying to hide. The comedy has a PG-13 rating for mature references, crude humor, and language.  

Continuing Films

"Frozen" brought in $22,184,000, with overall profits equaling more than $164 million. With the help of a mountain man, a reindeer, and a whimsical snowman, Anna takes off across a dangerous and wintry landscape on a quest to find her estranged sister. She'll also find her true inner courage. "Frozen" has a PG rating for mild rude humor and some action.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has earned over $356 million overall. This weekend, the movie brought in $13,150,000. During her Victory Tour of the Districts, Katniss begins to fully grasp just what kind of changes could be on the horizon. The Capitol will go to great lengths to stamp out any signs of potential rebellion. The sequel has a PG-13 rating for intense sequences of violence and action, frightening images, thematic elements, language, and a suggestive situation.

With weekend profits of $2,700,000, "Thor: The Dark World" surpassed the $198 million mark. The Dark Elves have unleashed a substance that could result in the end of the known universe, unless the Asgardians can step in. To save the day, Loki and Thor may have to join forces. The PG-13 rating is due to suggestive content and intense sci-fi action and violence.

"Out of the Furnace" earned $2,320,000, for total profits of more than $9 million. Two brothers growing up in an impoverished area will do anything to get a better life. When one of them makes some unwise decisions, his brother has to step in and clean up the mess. The R rating is due to drug content, violence, and language.

"Delivery Man" brought in $1,872,000. Since its debut, the comedy has earned over $27 million. After discovering that he's the biological parent of hundreds of people, slacker David has to grow up quickly. He also has to deal with a lawsuit that might reveal his true identity to his offspring. The film's PG-13 rating is due to thematic elements, mature content, drug material, language, and brief violence.
     
Movies to DVD

"Elysium" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, December 17. In the future, the divide between the wealthy and the rest of humanity is unbridgeable. Realizing that he doesn't have long to live, one man will infiltrate the enclave of the wealthy to find a cure. Strong violence and language contribute to an R rating.

In "Kick-Ass 2," Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass continue to look for new ways to bring vigilante justice to their world. When Kick-Ass joins a small group of crime fighters, he learns there's a relentless new villain on the loose. The film has an R rating for strong violence, crude and mature content, language, and brief nudity.

"Prisoners" follows one father's quest to rescue his little girl. After his daughter vanishes, her father will go to great lengths to bring her possible kidnapper to justice, even if he doesn't have the authorities on his side. "Prisoners" has an R rating for language and disturbing violence that includes torture.

"The Lone Ranger" sees Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp taking on the iconic roles of the Lone Ranger and Tonto. After becoming part of a tragedy, John Reid finds a new identity as a warrior who battles corruption and lawlessness. The PG-13 rating is due to some suggestive content and intense sequences of action and violence.

In "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," Percy and his friends realize that Camp Half-Blood could be in grave danger. To save his beloved training grounds, Percy will voyage into unknown territory to locate the Golden Fleece and fight back against the growing threat. Mild language, scary images, and fantasy action violence contribute to a PG rating.

"The Family" stars Robert De Niro as the patriarch of a well-connected mafia family. His cushy life ends when Giovanni works with the police, and he and his family have to take on awkward and difficult new identities to stay safe. "The Family" has an R rating for violence, language, and mature content.
