Zach Galifianakis was a successful hitchhiker, because he always carried a sign reading "I don't have a gun".

The comedian and actor stars in new road movie 'Due Date' - about a guy who has to get from one side of the US to the other by road for the birth of his baby - and said he had plenty of experience for the role because he has made many trips across the US previously.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I've done several road trips in my life, I used to hitchhike in the United States. It's not encouraged in the US whatsoever, but I used to carry a sign saying 'I don't have a gun' and people would pick me up."

'Due Date' was made by Todd Philips, who directed Zach in his breakthrough role in 'The Hangover', and the star said that there are a number of differences between the characters he plays in the two films.

He added: "I think with comedy you want a lot of things to go wrong and I think the couple of characters I've played in 'The Hangover' and this one, I think people may see as similar characters, but they are very different.

"The guy in 'The Hangover', Alan, can't even drive a car, can't go near a school; this guy here is a lot more emotional, even though he's out of his mind, but the point of a comedy, my job, is to get reactions out of other characters and the audience as well."

He also joked that since he became a box office star he gets lots of attention from the public, often in the strangest and most inappropriate places.

Zach said: "I can't got to a bathroom in public anymore without a 14-year-old following me in, whereas it used to be the other way around! No I'm just kidding!"
