Interview: Greer Grammer from "Life Partners"

June 13th, 2014

My latest interview is with the very talented young actress,‭ ‬Greer Grammer,‭ ‬who currently can be seen on MTV‭’‬s Awkward.‭ ‬She is the daughter of TV‭ ‬great‭ ‬Kelsey Grammer and she is making her way through Hollywood with her latest film Life Partners.‭ ‬The movie stars Gossip Girl‭’‬s Leighton Meester and deals with a man getting between two best friends.‭ ‬Greer was nice enough to sit down with us here at The Movie Network and tell us all about her role in the film.

Nick Leyland from The Movie Network:‭ ‬I saw your new film Life Partners and I really enjoyed it.‭ ‬It was a fun movie to watch really,‭ ‬because your character is pretty hilarious,‭ ‬because I know several girls like that.‭ ‬Could you tell us a little bit about your character as Mia‭?

‬Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Yeah.‭ ‬So,‭ ‬Mia is kind of a fun loving‭ ‬20-year old lesbian at least for now.‭ ‬I don't know.‭ ‬She's in her‭ ‬20s,‭ ‬she gets high,‭ ‬smokes pot.‭ ‬She clings on people.‭ ‬She is excited about life and doing all these cool things.‭ ‬I think my favorite line is the one about going to the Tegan and Sara concert in Alaska with Eskimos and doing drugs.‭ [‬chuckle‭] ‬So yeah,‭ ‬she's just kind of this girl that doesn't have to care about the future or anything.‭ ‬She's just happy and it's really fun to see how that plays with the movie and Leighton‭’‬s character,‭ ‬in particular,‭ ‬when she's trying to figure out what she actually gonna do with her life,‭ ‬since she‭'‬s now in her late‭ ‬20s and can't be the fun loving person that Mia is anymore.‭

TMN:‭ ‬That‭’‬s funny because I was gonna bring up that quote about Alaska too because it's one of your final scenes and reminded me of so many people I know.Where do you think in California someone would find a girl like Mia,‭ ‬hula-hooping at Coachella or something‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Oh yeah.‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬you can find girls like Mia,‭ ‬I feel like,‭ ‬in a lot of places in LA.‭ ‬You can definitely find them at Coachella.‭ ‬She's definitely hip and‭ ‬cool,‭ ‬and into all the drugs and stuff.‭ ‬I'm totally different.‭ ‬I've never set foot in Coachella.‭ ‬I go to Stagecoach for like country music.‭

[‬laughter‭]

TMN:‭ ‬Tell me about working with Leighton Meester.‭

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Oh,‭ ‬Leighton was great.‭ ‬She was so funny‭ '‬cause I walked in.‭ ‬I was kind of the youngest person in the film.‭ ‬Everyone's in mid to later‭ ‬20s which also,‭ ‬like I said,‭ ‬played kind of into the movie and the role,‭ ‬but I was kind of the youngest one.‭ ‬And so,‭ ‬I was very intimidated.‭ ‬I grew up watching Gossip Girl,‭ ‬and The OC,‭ ‬and SNL,‭ ‬and everything.‭ ‬So,‭ ‬here I am in this movie with Leighton,‭ ‬and Adam,‭ ‬and all these people,‭ ‬but I was super scared to meet Leighton,‭ ‬intimidated just like,‭ "‬Oh,‭ ‬my god.‭ ‬What am I gonna do.‭" ‬She came and was like,‭ "‬You're‭ ‬on that show where the girl says,‭ ‬you're welcome,‭ ‬right‭?" ‬I was like,‭ "‬Yeah.‭" ‬She was like,‭ "‬My little sister loves that show.‭ ‬We're gonna have to get a picture,‭ ‬so I can show her that you're in a movie.‭" ‬I was like,‭ "‬Oh,‭ ‬that's freaking cool.‭"

‬But she was so nice and sweet and so down to earth and it was really nice,‭ ‬because she made kind of getting into that part easier.‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬it's not like we had any graphic kissing scene or anything crazy,‭ ‬but it was definitely still a total change of pace for me to‭ ‬go from playing Lissa to Mia and I was filming both Awkward and Life Partners at the same time.‭ ‬So,‭ ‬it was definitely,‭ ‬yeah,‭ ‬a very different role that I was nervous about doing,‭ ‬but she made it so comfortable and she's just really cool.‭ ‬She's a really cool girl.‭

TMN:‭ ‬So,‭ ‬there is Sasha and Paige,‭ ‬and they have this fantastic friendship that is kind of the rock for each other throughout the film.‭ ‬And then,‭ ‬Paige meets a boy and it kind of breaks them apart.‭ ‬Is there someone in your life that you could relate to with that while you read the script for the film‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Yeah,‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬I think everyone can relate to that.‭ ‬You have a best friend and then they get a boyfriend,‭ ‬and then,‭ ‬you're like,‭ "‬Oh,‭ ‬okay.‭ ‬I never see you anymore.‭" ‬I mean,‭ ‬it's not as big,‭ ‬but my best friend,‭ ‬Ella,‭ ‬I've known her since I was two.‭ ‬We went to preschool together and she's been like my best friend,‭ ‬my person,‭ ‬and she got a boyfriend in high school.‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬nothing too crazy,‭ ‬but they were together for two years and I just remember being like,‭ "‬Oh,‭ ‬oh,‭ ‬we can't hang out.‭ ‬You are with Jimmy tonight.‭ ‬Okay.‭ ‬Cool.‭ ‬See you later.‭"

[‬chuckle‭]

‬And it kind of sucks because there's a point where you do have to step back.‭ ‬When does your boyfriend or significant other,‭ ‬or whoever you're planning on spending your life with,‭ ‬become your person and where do you step back from your friends‭? ‬And I think that's a hard thing that everyone goes through.‭ ‬I've been with my boyfriend now for a year and a half and we both made a very conscious effort to make sure that that didn't happen with us because we both had friends that that has happened to and we couldn't stand it.‭ ‬So we were always like,‭ "‬We have to be able to make time for our friends because we don't wanna become that person‭"‬.‭ ‬My best‭ ‬friend that I lived with in college and everything,‭ ‬was like,‭ "‬Yeah,‭ ‬we see Greer all the time‭"‬,‭ ‬because we have friends that are gone now with their boyfriends.‭ ‬But I've always tried to make an effort to be with my friends because those relationships are‭ ‬so important and so important for your life and well being.‭

TMN:‭ ‬It's funny when you meet someone and they have only had their friends for a few months.‭ ‬You're like,‭ "‬Wait,‭ ‬where are your old friends that you've had forever‭?"

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Yeah,‭ ‬I know,‭ ‬seriously.‭ ‬I have so many friends that just now have a couple friends that they all just met and I'm like,‭ "‬Wait,‭ ‬where is all the people we used to hang out with‭?"

TMN:‭ ‬I first saw you in‭ "‬Almost Kings‭" ‬and I talked to one of your co-stars at the time,‭ ‬Alex Frost.‭ ‬That was your first motion picture,‭ ‬I believe,‭ ‬right‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Yeah.‭

TMN:‭ ‬How have you developed as an actress since then and what lessons have you learned from doing this new movie,‭ "‬Life Partners‭"?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Oh my God,‭ ‬I've developed a ton since then.‭ ‬Up until that point,‭ ‬that was the second thing I'd ever booked.‭ ‬I did a guess-star or a co-star on‭ "‬iCarly‭" ‬and then months later I booked‭ "‬Almost Kings‭"‬.‭ ‬It was funny though,‭ ‬a little fun fact about that role.‭ ‬In the original script my character was kind of this sluttier person.‭ ‬She goes off into the woods and sleeps with one of the guys,‭ ‬and I was like,‭ "‬Ooh cool,‭ ‬I could do this‭"‬.‭ ‬And then,‭ ‬the next day after I had booked the role and they sent me an updated script and it was now this Christian girl type and all this stuff and I was like,‭ "‬Oh okay,‭ ‬that works too‭"‬.‭ ‬And this is the little fun fact,‭ ‬because Lissa was originally written that way for Awkward.‭ ‬She wasn't Christian,‭ ‬she was just a bitchy friend of Sadie's,‭ ‬but then after I got the part,‭ ‬Lauren,‭ ‬our creator,‭ ‬came up to us and she was like,‭ "‬I made her churchy,‭ ‬I hope that's okay‭"‬.‭ ‬And I was like,‭ "‬Yeah,‭ ‬it's the second time...‭ " ‬Apparently,‭ ‬I just look really Christian.‭

[‬laughter‭]

‬But I don't know,‭ ‬I've changed a ton.‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬it was so fun,‭ ‬I remember being on set and loving it and I had previously been friends with Lorenzo James Henrie who was the main kinda character,‭ ‬the little kid.‭ ‬And yeah,‭ ‬I don't know.‭ ‬It was such a fun thing for me to do though.‭ ‬I was like,‭ "‬Oh‭ ‬my God,‭ ‬I'm in a movie‭"‬.‭ ‬But it's definitely changed and doing Life Partners is a whole different kinda level.‭ ‬It's still an independent film and it reminds me a little bit of my time on Almost Kings,‭ ‬but it's definitely more fun to be kind of a bigger part and she was working with all these really great cool actors that I grew up with.‭

TMN:‭ ‬Now,‭ ‬you won multiple pageant titles in your life,‭ ‬I saw,‭ ‬and so you obviously would do well in the model industry alone.‭ ‬What made you decide to go into television and film acting‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Well,‭ ‬one thing,‭ ‬I'm not tall enough to be a model.‭

TMN:‭ ‬Oh,‭ ‬you're not‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬No,‭ ‬I'm like‭ ‬5‭'‬5‭"‬.‭ ‬I can do print and stuff,‭ ‬but I don't know,‭ ‬I'm so not a model.‭ ‬When I do photo shoots I'm like,‭ "‬What am I supposed to be doing,‭ ‬I don't know what to do with my hands‭"‬.‭ ‬I don't know,‭ ‬I've always loved acting.‭ ‬Even at a young age,‭ ‬I'd dress up as a different Disney princess everyday,‭ ‬I was in my different outfits.‭ ‬I grew up for a couple of years in my mom's house right on the beach and she used to go downstairs to the beach and sometimes she'd be like,‭ "‬Do you wanna come‭?" ‬And I'd say,‭ "‬No‭"‬,‭ ‬and I'd just sit on my couch and I'd watch‭ "‬My Fair Lady‭"‬,‭ ‬all three hours of it.‭ ‬I was like three.‭ ‬I don't know why,‭ ‬it was my favorite movie.‭ ‬I've just always kind of been obsessed with playing characters and different things.‭ ‬So,‭ ‬there was never really a choice of what do I wanna do,‭ ‬I just always wanted to act and tell stories.‭

TMN:‭ ‬Your father is the famous Hollywood actor Kelsey Grammer and you are a young beautiful actress on the rise.‭ ‬Can you tell me about how Hollywood life for you‭? ‬Is the competition overwhelming‭? ‬Is it filled with let downs or is it the most wonderful thing ever‭?

‬Greer Grammer:‭ ‬A little bit of both.‭ ‬It's pretty wonderful if you're into that kind of a thing.‭ ‬If you like it.‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬going out and getting recognized is definitely still a cool thing for me.‭ ‬I know that,‭ ‬to some people,‭ ‬it would seem like it's such an overbearing thing to happen to them,‭ ‬which I mean,‭ ‬I get if it is if you're Beyonce,‭ ‬or Katy Perry,‭ ‬or someone that's now getting recognized at everything.‭ ‬But,‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬it's still cool for me to go out to Disneyland or to go to the mall and have people come up and ask if I'm the girl from Awkward‭ ‬because people are watching the show,‭ ‬and it's fun,‭ ‬and I always wanted that as a kid,‭ ‬be recognized for your work.‭ ‬But,‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬I would say that luckily my whole life isn't about Hollywood or doing all the Hollywood stuff.‭ ‬It's fun.‭ ‬I love going to events.‭ ‬I love getting dressed up and getting my picture taken.‭ ‬But I also,‭ ‬I went to college.‭ ‬I did four years at USC.‭ ‬That's done now.‭ ‬And my friends keep me grounded,‭ ‬my normal friends who don't want anything to do with acting or Hollywood.‭ ‬At the end of the‭ ‬day,‭ ‬I still had to ace my midterms and have to write my papers,‭ ‬and do all my homework and everything.‭ ‬And that really just kept me kind of grounded.‭

I don't think I would like my life if it was just based on Hollywood especially because you do get competitive.‭ ‬I find myself looking at pictures or stuff of girls that have booked roles that I've gone out for and think like,‭ "‬She's so pretty.‭ ‬Of course,‭ ‬she got it.‭" ‬Or,‭ "‬Ah,‭ ‬this person is so talented.‭" ‬Or,‭ "‬She works all the time.‭" ‬And you can get very down on yourself,‭ ‬and I have many times.‭ ‬But there's just a fine line of realizing what's real life and what's not,‭ ‬and how to distance yourself properly.‭

TMN:‭ ‬You must have crazy will power because if I was in your situation,‭ ‬it would be so hard for me to‭ ‬sit down and study for a test.‭

[‬chuckle‭]

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬I mean,‭ ‬don't get me wrong.‭ ‬It's hard and I've always been the biggest procrastinator in the planet.‭ ‬So I don't like sitting down and studying,‭ ‬but you have to.‭ ‬It sounds horrible to be like,‭ ‬I mainly went to college to get my degree,‭ ‬just to have one.‭ ‬I'm a theater major,‭ ‬so it's not like I'm not doing what I'm doing with my degree.‭ ‬Everyone's like,‭ "‬Oh,‭ ‬that's so good of you to go get a backup.‭" ‬And I'm like,‭ "‬No,‭ ‬it's in theater.‭"‬.‭ ‬I don't have a‭ ‬backup.‭ ‬But a lot of it too was I wanted to go to USC because I wanted to have a big football team,‭ ‬and go to a big collegiate school,‭ ‬and I wanted to be in a sorority.‭ ‬I wanted the college experience I think more than I actually wanted to go to college.‭

TMN:‭ ‬Well,‭ ‬my last question for you is what can we expect to see from you in the future‭?

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Oh,‭ ‬God.‭ ‬Everything I hope.‭ ‬I don't know.‭ ‬Currently I'm just kind of doing‭ '‬Awkward‭'‬,‭ ‬and still auditioning,‭ ‬and doing meetings and stuff for other things.‭ ‬But I hope to be like a Reese Witherspoon because I love her.‭ ‬She's my favorite.‭ ‬Reese Witherspoon mixed with Rachel McAdams is my goal for myself.‭ ‬I wanna be able to do serious stuff,‭ ‬but I also love comedy.‭ ‬I love it.‭ ‬But I also wanna do tons of rom-coms and TV.‭ ‬I love TV.‭ ‬I don't know.‭ ‬I just wanna work.‭ ‬I'd love to go do theater too.‭ ‬That's the thing.‭ ‬I'd love to go be on Broadway at some point in my career,‭ ‬because that's what I grew up doing and that's what I love.‭

TMN:‭  ‬Thank you so much for talking with me.‭ ‬I really appreciate it.‭

Greer Grammer:‭ ‬Of course.‭ ‬Thank you so much.‭
