'The Great Gatsby' will open Cannes Film Festival.

Baz Luhrmann's lavish period drama - starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan - will kick off the 66th annual movie gala in Cannes, southern France on May 15.

The director said in an announcement: ''We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.''

Luhrmann previously opened Cannes in 2001 with his Oscar-winning musical 'Moulin Rouge'.

The blockbuster 3D film, which is adapted from the 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name, stars DiCaprio, Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke.

The film is set in New York City during the Roaring Twenties and tells the story of a young man, Nick Carraway (Maguire) whose fortunes change after meeting the enigmatic Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio).

Rapper Jay-Z wrote the score for the opulent movie along with music producer The Bullitts.

'The Great Gatsby' is due for release on May 10.
