Weekend Wrap-Up: What Happened at the Box Office?

The sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Retaliation features the G.I. Joe Team coming into a conflict with Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), Storm Shadow and Firefly (Ray Stevenson) all serving under the newly released Cobra Commander. Zartan (who is last seen in disguise as the President of the United States) frames all G.I. Joe operatives as traitors and wipes most of them out in a sneak attack, leaving only Roadblock, Snake Eyes, Flint, and Lady Jaye. Zartan and the Commander now have all the world leaders under Cobra's control, with warheads headed towards innocent populaces. Badly beaten, out numbered, and outgunned the Joes make a desperate plan to expose the truth and stop Cobra from taking over the world. Starring Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye.

Monday Wrap-Up for April 1

 

With earnings of $41,200,000, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" nabbed top honors at the box office during the weekend of March 29. With Cobra Commander threatening to hijack the entire country for his own nefarious purposes, Roadblock and his fellow G.I. Joes are the only heroes brave enough to step in and prevent a total takeover. If they want to match Cobra Commander's cunning, however, the soldiers will have to team up with the most renowned hero of them all. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to martial arts action, combat violence, language, and brief sensuality. 

 

"Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor" earned $22,300,000 during its first weekend in theaters. Judith is a smart young woman who makes it her business to fix other people's relationships. She enjoys her own secure marriage with a man she has known since childhood. When a seductive and unscrupulous billionaire sets his eye on Judith, however, her ability to save marriages might not extend to her own relationship. Drug content, language, and mature content contribute to the movie's PG-13 rating. 

 

"The Host" did not perform quite as well as expected, bringing in around $11,002,000 during its debut weekend. Melanie Stryder knows her time is limited. A race of aliens known as "the Souls" has been slowly taking over the human race. Melanie's body might be the next one to become a host. To her surprise, however, she may be able to work with one of the Souls to redeem the human race and restore balance. Due to sensuality and violence, the film has a PG-13 rating. 

 

Continuing Films

 

"The Croods" earned $26,500,000 during Easter weekend. Overall, the movie has brought in more than $88 million. Eep just wants to explore the world outside her cave, but her fearful father keeps a close watch over his family. When an accident forces the family to find a new home, the cave people are astonished to discover a vibrant new world waiting for them. The movie has a PG rating for scary action sequences. 

 

With box office profits of $14 million, "Olympus Has Fallen" has now earned more than $54 million. The President's life is in grave danger. A former guard is the President's best chance at survival. However, this disgraced guard has to overcome the demons of his past if he wants to make a better future for the entire country. Strong violence and language contribute to an R rating. 

 

"Oz the Great and Powerful" has maintained a healthy presence at the box office. This past weekend, the fantasy epic brought in $11,605,000. Since its debut, the movie has brought in more than $198 million. After a tornado carries Oscar to a fantastical world, he learns that it is up to him to fulfill a prophecy and save the world from an ominous threat. He meets three beautiful witches, but Oscar will have to discover which witches he can trust. The movie has a PG rating for brief mild language, action sequences, and scary images. 

 

"The Call" added $4,800,000 to its overall profits of more than $39 million. After Jordan makes a fatal mistake, she continues her job as a 911 operator, hoping for a chance to redeem herself. When the chance finally comes, Jordan will go above and beyond to save the life of the young girl on the other end of the call. Despite her best efforts, it may not be enough. "The Call" has an R rating for language, disturbing content, and violence. 

 

Movies to DVD

 

"John Dies at the End" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, April 2. The dark and quirky comedy centers on two lazy and ambitionless friends, John and David. As it turns out, a mysterious drug called Soy Sauce has opened the gates for an ominous threat, and the two pals have an unexpected shot at becoming heroes. Of course, they could also fail horribly. The R rating is due to gore, violence, language, drug content, and nudity. 

 

"The Baytown Outlaws" stars Eva Longoria as a woman who is out for revenge. Determined to retrieve her godson from a feared drug lord, she employs three brothers who are ruthless hired guns. These outlaws can get the job done, but along the way, they will run into all kinds of trouble. The film has an R rating for strong violence, mature content, drug content, and pervasive language. 

 

"Hemingway & Gellhorn" stars Nicole Kidman as Martha Gellhorn, a daring journalist, and Clive Owen as Ernest Hemingway, one of the world's most renowned writers. The movie follows the dramatic romance that blooms between the two, against the powerful backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. As their careers grow and blossom, Hemingway and Gellhorn find that their romance faces challenges. The film is not rated.
