Set in 2004 Baghdad, Kathryn Bigelow directs a tense and realistic drama focusing on three American soldiers whose job is to harmlessly disable improvised explosive devices (IEDs). 'Coriolanus' is like ''Shakespeare meets 'The Hurt Locker', according to Gerard Butler.

The 42-year-old actor stars as gruff warlord Tullus Aufidus in the Ralph Fiennes directed movie which updates the Shakespearian setting to a Balkan like state and Gerard loves the contemporary setting.

He said: ''It's like Shakespeare meets 'The Hurt Locker'. You've got the political machinations but you've got this wild action as well. When I read the script, it felt like a classic, modern cinema piece. It's a dense play but all those ridiculously long and verbose speeches have been taken out so it's easier to follow.''

Gerard also admitted there is a ''homoerotic'' undercurrent between his character and his nemesis played by Ralph although he believes he had the upper hand over his fellow thespian when it came to their fight scenes.

He explained to Shortlist magazine: ''It's about the hatred between these two guys but also the passion, so there's almost a homoerotic thing going go. There's all this stuff about being beard to beard...

''Although it's not like Ralph hasn't dealt with action before, I definitely felt like I had more experience in that area.''
