Jeremy Renner has reportedly been offered the main role in 'The Bourne Legacy'.

Many actors including Dominic Cooper and Shia LaBeouf have been linked to the film but now the 'Hurt Locker' star has formally been offered the part by Universal Pictures, according to Deadline.com.

In the thriller spinoff - which will follow from the first three 'Bourne Identity' films, which starred Matt Damon as Jason Bourne - Jeremy is set to play an operative from a government program more dangerous than the one that hatched Jason.

The 40-year-old hunk is expected to sign on quickly in time for production which is rumoured to start in September.

Jeremy was linked to the movie during two cycles of tests which took place over eight weeks to find the right actor, during which high-profile actors such as James Franco and Jake Gyllenhaal were said to be involved.

Matt's original character Jason won't be involved in the Tony Gilroy-directed project, with the actor saying he would only get involved with the franchise again with original director Paul Greengrass.

He said: "I'd do it again with Paul. Universal doesn't actually own the Bourne character - the estate does - so technically I could go to Warner Bros. and Universal could read about it online."
