Monday Wrap-Up for July 23rd

As anticipated, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" drew record-breaking numbers to the theaters during the weekend of Friday, July 20th. However, the movie's success was overshadowed by an unexpected tragedy. In Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight premiere of the film, an armed gunman entered the theater. In the aftermath of the shootings, 12 people have died and more than 50 are injured. Both Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale have issued statements expressing their shock and sorrow over the tragedy. "The Dark Knight Rises" is the final entry in Nolan's trilogy. In the film, Bruce Wayne returns to his vigilante ways, spurred into action by a diabolical villain who threatens the innocence and peace of the city he loves. Although the studio cancelled certain international premieres out of respect for the shooting victims, "The Dark Knight Rises" will continue to play at theaters countrywide. The film has a PG-13 rating for action scenes, language and some sensuality.

Continuing Films

"Ice Age: Continental Drift" continued to perform well at the box office this weekend. The family-friendly animated adventure reunites good friends Manny, Diego and Sid. When the landmass that they call home begins breaking into smaller continents, the three friends have to depend on each other more than ever. They set out to help Manny find his family, but soon end up sidetracked by pirates. Meanwhile, the irrepressible Scrat is off causing plenty of trouble of his own. "Ice Age: Continental Drift" has a PG rating for scenes of peril, mild action scenes and rude humor.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" landed in third place in overall box office rankings for the weekend. Peter Parker may just seem like any other high school student, but he already has a complicated past. Peter lost his parents when he was young, and now his only way of connecting with them is to piece together the mysterious clues they left behind. As Peter continues to find out more about his parents' legacy, he realizes that his destiny might be far from ordinary. Emma Stone co-stars as Gwen, Peter's love interest. "The Amazing Spider-Man" is rated PG-13 for action and violence.

Director Seth McFarlane has created yet another memorable character. "Ted" is the story of John, a human, and Ted, a talking teddy bear. Ted has been John's constant companion since childhood, but now the two pals are both entering adulthood. While John tries to get serious and figure out his future, Ted is more than happy to live in the moment. The ensuing arguments end up testing the friendship more than either John or Ted expected. The raunchy comedy has an R rating due to drug use, crude and mature content and pervasive language.

In "Brave," Princess Merida breaks the mold of traditional animated princesses. The redheaded heroine is tough, feisty and wants nothing more than to be in charge of her own destiny. However, she quickly learns that making decisions is not something to be taken lightly. When she accidentally endangers the life and well-being of the person she loves the most, Merida will do whatever it takes to undo the damage. "Brave" has a PG rating for scary action sequences and some mild rude humor.

Channing Tatum plays the title role in "Magic Mike." The film is still performing well in theaters. A construction worker by day, Mike has a secret. At night, he is one of the most celebrated male strippers in town. When a young coworker expresses interest in the business, Mike warns him that it will not be an easy career path. However, he agrees to teach the younger man the tricks of the trade. Unfortunately, he cannot prepare his friend for the dark side of the business that comes along with fame and fortune. "Magic Mike" has an R rating for graphic nudity, language, drug use and mature content throughout.

Movies to DVD

"Meeting Evil" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, July 24th. Luke Wilson and Samuel L. Jackson star in this dark crime mystery about an ordinary man who ends up in over his head. When John is taken hostage by a stranger with unsettling motives, he has to draw on courage he did not know he had. However, it still might not be enough to save his family from a looming nightmare. "Meeting Evil" has an R rating for language and violent content.

"The Deep Blue Sea" stars Rachel Weisz as Hester, a woman whose own heart betrays her. Although she should be content with her life as a judge's wife, Hester cannot help feeling restless. When she meets Freddie, a charismatic pilot, Hester embarks on a dangerous love affair. Her world could come crashing down at any moment. The film has an R rating for mature content and nudity.
