Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

"The Croods" scooped first place honors at the box office during the weekend of March 22. The animated movie earned $44,700,000. After losing their home, a family of prehistoric cave people sets out in search of a new dwelling, despite their misgivings and fears. When they stumble upon an amazing new landscape, the family members have to learn how to take chances and help each other out. "The Croods" has a PG rating for some scary action scenes.

"Olympus Has Fallen" brought in $30,500,000 during its first weekend in theaters. When terrorists take over the White House, the life of the President is in grave danger. With the entire nation at a standstill, only one man has the insider knowledge to save the President and defeat the terrorists. However, the question still remains: does this former Presidential guard have the courage to meet the challenge? The R rating is due to strong violence and language throughout.

"Admission" saw $6,445,650 in box office profits over the weekend. Portia is not good with kids, and she has no real desire to be a mother. She enjoys her prestigious job as an admissions officer for an Ivy League school. When her past catches up with her in a surprising way, Portia ends up risking a big promotion and taking chances that she never would have considered before. The PG-13 rating is due to mature content and language.

"Oz the Great and Powerful" left the top spot in box office rankings since it first opened. With profits of $22,031,000, the fantasy adventure film has brought in more than $177 million. When a tornado carries him to a whole new world, a wily circus magician named Oscar finally has a chance to accept his great destiny and become a true hero. Faced with witches and flying monkeys, though, Oscar could end up losing his nerve. "Oz the Great and Powerful" has a PG rating for brief mild language, scary images, and action sequences.

"The Call" earned $8,700,000. Overall, the movie has seen profits of more than $30 million. Jordan takes her job as a 911 operator very seriously, especially since a fateful call that left her feeling haunted. When Jordan receives a call that reminds her of her past, she realizes that she has a chance to redeem herself and save a young woman's life. However, she may not be able to outsmart the killer. The R rating is due to disturbing content, violence, and language.

"Spring Breakers" hit nationwide theaters on March 22, leading to $5,000,000 of weekend profits. Since its limited release on March 15, the movie has earned $5,406,858. Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens star in this spirited crime comedy about a group of four young friends who just want to have fun. Determined to enjoy a memorable Spring Break experience, the friends go to surprising lengths to drum up the funds. Soon, they are in over their heads, but an unscrupulous new friend is willing to help them out. "Spring Breakers" has an R rating for nudity, violence, drug use, language, and mature content.

Movies to DVD

"Les Miserables" arrived out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Friday, March 22. Based on the popular musical of the same name, the film follows Jean Valjean, an escaped convict who struggles to become a more noble and virtuous man. His quest ends up complicated by enemies, such as a vengeful police officer, and friends, such as a young girl he adopts as his own. The PG-13 rating is due to suggestive and mature content, thematic elements, and violence.

"This Is 40" came out on DVD on March 22. Judd Apatow's comedy shines a light on middle age. As Pete and Debbie approach middle age, they have to get honest with themselves and each other about their dissatisfactions and failures. With some hard work and honesty, however, the two may be able to revive their lackluster marriage and careers. Crude humor, mature content, drug material, and pervasive language contribute to the film's R rating.

"Lincoln" is available on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, March 26. Daniel Day-Lewis turns in an Oscar-winning performance as Abraham Lincoln, one of America's most beloved Presidents. At the end of a brutal war, Lincoln still has a battle ahead of him. He will have to make difficult decisions if he wants to transform his country into a more equal and peaceful land. "Lincoln" has a PG-13 rating for intense war violence, images of carnage, and brief strong language.

"Parental Guidance" stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as two well-meaning grandparents who are about to confront the generation gap. While babysitting their wayward grandchildren, Artie and Diane have to lay down some serious ground rules. The PG rating is due to some rude humor.
