Gwyneth Paltrow "envied" her 'Country Strong' character's sense of freedom.

The Oscar-winning actress - who plays a fallen country singer with a drink-and-drug problem in the Shana Feste-directed drama - admits her life is too much about "responsibility" and was jealous of her character Kelly's ability to not "have a care in the world".

She said: "My life is all responsibility. An amazing thing about playing Kelly was this abandon she had. I envied it in a way.

"I'm so organised and sometimes you feel like the responsibility you put on yourself is just gonna choke you. It was wonderful to play someone who, to everyone's detriment, just didn't have a care in the world."

The 38-year-old star- who has children Apple, six and Moses, four, with Coldplay singer Chris Martin - took her family with her to Nashville to film the project, but did need a week alone to get into the headspace of a woman with dependency issues.

She added to the Los Angeles Times: "I've always been home and I want to raise my kids myself and you can't be starring in three movies a year, you know it just doesn't work.

"I went for a week by myself, 'cause I thought there's no way I can get into this character with my toddlers running around. You come home from playing drunk and sobbing and you're like, 'Hey, let's make a painting!' They're just two different worlds."
