A 2008 drama with a two-tiered storyline, The Burning Plain moves fluidly in time with the the present showing Sylvia (Charlize Theron) as she leads a confident life as the manager of an expensive restaurant. However she's only putting up a mask to cover her promiscuity, self-mutilation, and suicidal impulses. Many years earlier, a young girl named Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence) tries to piece together what led her mother (Kim Basinger) into an extramarital affair. At the same time, she falls into a dangerous relationship with the son of her mother’s lover. These threads and more are interwoven into an increasingly potent knot.
