Wes Anderson's 'Moonrise Kingdom' will open this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The movie - about a pair of young lovers who run away from their home town, starring Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray - will kick off proceedings at the annual event on May 16, with artistic director Thierry Fremaux proclaiming it as a ''sensitive and independent''.

He said: ''Wes Anderson is one of the rising powers of American cinema to which he brings a highly personal touch, particularly in 'Moonrise Kingdom', which once again is a testimony to the creative of freedom in which he continues to evolve. Sensitive and independent, this admirer of Fellini and Renoir is also in his own right a brilliant and inventive filmmaker.''

Among Wes' previous directorial work includes 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums'.

'Midnight in Paris' opened the film festival last year, and went on to win an Oscar for director/writer Woody Allen.

'Moonrise Kingdom' is out in cinemas in May.
