What happened at the box office this weekend?

--Marvel's "The Avengers" crushed the competition this Friday, earning a record-breaking $200,300,000 during its debut weekend. The epic superhero flick is directed by Joss Whedon and features a whole host of stars, including Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson. Six superheroes have to join forces to defeat the villainous Loki, who plans to rule over the entire human race. The action movie is rated PG-13 for intense violence, action sequences and drug references. It remains to be seen whether "Marvel's The Avengers" will surpass the overall earnings of another 2012 sci-fi hit, "The Hunger Games."

"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," a charming comedy about a group of retirees, earned over $750 thousand during its opening weekend. Looking for adventure after retirement, several friends move to India and take up residence in a hotel that is not quite what it seems. The film is rated PG-13 for language and suggestive themes.

Other Theatrical Releases

"Think Like a Man" was knocked from first spot to second, earning $8 million over the weekend and bringing total earnings to over $73 million. The romantic comedy tells the story of a group of couples, all of them trying and failing to improve their relationships. The women of the group decide to get together and secretly read Steve Harvey's bestselling relationship advice book. When the men find out they're being manipulated, they strike back in hilarious ways. The comedy is rated PG-13 for language, some mature situations and drug use.

"The Lucky One" stars Zac Efron as Logan, a young Marine stationed in Iraq. When he comes home on leave, Logan has a plan. He wants to visit the woman of his dreams. The only problem is the love of his life does not even know who Logan is, but he hopes to change all that. The film is rated PG-13 for mature content and some violence.

"The Hunger Games" managed to land third spot in overall box office rankings, with earnings of over $5 million. The action epic's overall earnings have reached over $380 million. When young Primrose Everdeen is chosen to take part in a televised life-or-death competition, her older sister Katniss nobly steps in to take her place. Despite her brave spirit and her skills with a bow and arrow, Katniss is not sure she can survive and return home to her family. The suspenseful film is rated PG-13 for disturbing images and intense violence, all involving teenagers.

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt star as a young couple who are unlucky in love in "The Five-Year Engagement." The romantic comedy earned $5,088,000 this weekend, with a total domestic gross of over $19 million. Tom and Violet may seem like any other couple planning their wedding, but it soon becomes all too clear that life has other plans for them. The comedy is rated R for suggestive themes and language.

"The Pirates! Band of Misfits," a new family-friendly animated film, earned $5,400,000 over the weekend. The total gross has reached over $18 million. Hugh Grant provides the voice for the Pirate Captain. The dashing pirate hopes to rule the high seas, but he will have to manage his own crew first. The comedic film is rated PG for mild action and some crude humor.

A new gothic thriller about Edgar Allen Poe earned over $2 million during the weekend. "The Raven" has earned over $12 million since its opening weekend. When a serial killer starts referencing PoeŐs works in his murders, the writer volunteers to help the police find the murdererŐs identity. The dark action film is rated R for intense violence and disturbing imagery.

Movies to DVD

"The Vow" is available on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 8th. When a woman survives a dangerous car accident, she feels lucky to have her health. However, her life is changed, since years worth of memories are now completely gone. Her husband has to win her heart and make his wife fall in love with him all over again. The romance is rated PG-13 for some language, nudity and mature content.

"Underworld: Awakening" is the fourth film in the popular "Underworld" series. Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as Selene, a tough and skilled vampire warrior. This time, the lycans and the vampires have to face a terrifying new nemesis: human beings. The horror action movie is rated R for violence, gore and language.

"Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie" stars Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. The irreverent comedy is about their quest to create a movie with a massive budget. Plenty of celebrities appear in cameo roles. The raunchy comedy is rated R for crude humor, nudity, drug use and violence.
