Zoe Saldana would rather quit acting than always play "the girlfriend".

The 'Avatar' actress confesses she would not always want to be rescued and enjoys playing strong women in movies.

She said: "Hollywood has made a living out of portraying women as needing to be rescued all the time because we're so incompetent.

"I'd rather quit this business than constantly play the girlfriend of the action hero. Because in reality, if Spider-Man was always coming to my rescue, I'd get to the point of saying, 'Come on, man, I can do it myself!' "

The 32-year-old actress - who has played action roles in 'Star Trek', 'The Losers' and 'Takers' - also admits she thinks of herself as tough because of the skills she has learnt in the past.

She revealed to The Scotsman newspaper: "I can be tough. I learned to ride a dirtbike when I was nine, and I can be deadly with a bow and arrow. Don't mess with me!"

Zoe also believes the second 'Avatar' movie may not be made for a while, but she needs time to prepare regardless.

She added: "That could take 10 years. But when it does, I know the second 'Avatar' will be as great as the first one. I'll just need some advance warning because it takes about six months to get into that character."
