“The Amazing Spider-Man” arrived in theaters on Tuesday, July 3rd. Destined to be a summer blockbuster, the superhero movie offers a fresh take on Sam Raimi’s popular “Spider-Man” movies. This time, Andrew Garfield takes the starring role, while Marc Webb directs. Emma Stone stars as the plucky Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man’s first love. Young high schooler Peter Parker wants to learn more about his deceased parents. When he finds a briefcase that once belonged to his father, Peter believes he is finally on his way to learning more about his past and his identity. However, this path leads him straight into the path of Dr. Curt Connors, a man with a dark secret. Peter Parker will have to discover the qualities that make him a true superhero. “The Amazing Spider-Man” has a PG-13 rating for violence and action sequences.
“Savages” hits theaters on Friday, July 6th. Director Oliver Stone helms this edgy and nail-biting drama about Mexican drug wars. Three young friends, Ophelia, Ben and Chon, live a peaceful and uncomplicated life. There’s only one problem: their main source of income is growing marijuana. Although the three assume they can dodge the law, everything changes when the Mexican Baja Cartel approaches them and demands to become partners. Chon, Ben and Ophelia have to make some difficult and dangerous decisions. The choices might help them regain their former freedom, or it might cost them their lives. The tense thriller is rated R for nudity, drug use, language, brutal violence and graphically mature content.
Rob Reiner directs “The Magic of Belle Isle,” a poignant comedic drama about an author who needs a fresh start in life. Monte Wildhorn used to see writing as his greatest joy in life. Lately, though, he has not been getting much writing done. Monte decides a change of scenery might do the trick. In a scenic and rural town, the disabled author quickly meets a family that starts to reignite his passion for writing. Soon, he also realizes that the family’s single mother might just be reigniting his passion for life in general. The film has a PG rating for some suggestive references and thematic elements. Morgan Freeman stars.
“Ted” is a quirky comedy from director Seth McFarlane, creator of “Family Guy.” When John is just a little boy, his teddy bear comes to life. The two quickly become close friends and share all their major milestones together. However, when John becomes an adult, real life slowly starts to intrude on the unusual friendship. It does not help that Ted is not the kind of friend John wants around his girlfriends. John has to make a tough decision between his best friend and the love of his life, but Ted won’t go without fighting for the friendship. “Ted” has an R rating for language, crude and mature content and drug use.
“Magic Mike” is a dramatic comedy about the dark side of fame, fortune and stripping. When young Adam decides to take up stripping as a way to earn some easy money, he soon learns he needs the help of veteran Magic Mike. Steven Soderbergh directs the movie, which has an R rating for nudity, language, drug use and pervasive mature content.
Pixar has brought a new family classic to theaters with “Brave.” Princess Merida is a tough young girl with hair that matches her fiery spirit. When a curse threatens her community, Merida will risk everything to make things right. Along the way, she learns important lessons about what it truly means to be a princess. “Brave” has a PG rating for some scary action sequences and rude humor. Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman direct.
“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” is an energetic animated adventure from directors Conrad Vernon, Tom McGrath and Eric Darnell. Gloria the hippo, Melman the giraffe, Alex the lion and Marty the zebra are still stranded far from home. They dream of returning to the Central Park Zoo, but heading homeward is not a simple task. The foursome joins a traveling circus. They will have to stay in disguise and on their toes if they want to avoid an evil animal control officer. The family-friendly movie is rated PG for mild action sequences and some rude humor.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” is a raucous new comedy by director and star Tyler Perry. The talented comedian returns to his popular role as Madea, a tough and fiery matriarch who will go to great lengths to protect her loved ones. Now, she is protecting somebody else’s family. When a disgraced CFO and his spoiled family have to stay with Madea as they hide from trouble, the culture clash has tensions run hilariously high. The film has a PG-13 rating for drug references and crude remarks.
